The San Francisco Film Commission needed a campaign to attract more production companies to make films and television shows in the city. The problem? Virtually no self-promotion budget. Because San Francisco is unable to compete with other locations on cost, the campaign instead focused on the The City by the Bay’s track record as the setting of countless screen classics.

The “Scene in San Francisco” campaign was printed as booklets, postcards and advertisements in Variety magazine. Mayor Gavin Newsom personally quoted one of the taglines from the campaign during a press conference about how to attract business into the city, noting that “this is where Harry got Dirty!”
